Strengthening UK industry

Sherwood Stainless Steel & Aluminium Limited is a privately owned independent British company that has been operating since 1990. Employing over 120 staff and with more than 30 production lines, the company offers high quality precision production, finishing and stockholding of stainless steel and aluminium to industries including automotive, construction, rail, lighting and healthcare.

Sustainability in action

Through its Environment Sustainability Strategy, Sherwood Group is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its work. These commitments include carbon neutrality and zero waste to landfill by 2035, and the continuous development of low carbon supply options to Sherwood clients.

This Sustainability Strategy also underpins the modernisation and expansion of Sherwood’s facilities and production lines, which has seen significant investment in equipment and technologies, such as new powder coating hybrid ovens capable of running electrically and at lower temperatures.

Shine, shape, scale

Powering equipment and operations with zero carbon electricity is key to reaching Sherwood’s carbon neutrality objective, and so the decision was made to invest in the Group’s own source of renewable energy generation at the company’s primary manufacturing and assembly site on the Science Park in Wolverhampton.

Aware of Mypower’s track record in the steel and heavy manufacturing industries, we were contacted directly by the Sherwood Group CEO to quantify the potential for solar generation at Wolverhampton.  Understanding Sherwood’s objectives, site specific requirements and their desired time frames we were able to outline our step by step process from sizing, designing and configuring the most appropriate solution to scheduling, installing and commissioning the system.

Precisely engineered

Mypower’s 693.84 kWp rooftop system was carefully designed to be installed around the existing rooflights. With our experience of controlled critical manufacturing sites we developed detailed Risk Assessments and Method Statements, and a bespoke programme of works detailing everything from equipment delivery, site and roof access, cabling and mains panel alterations. The result was a seamless delivery, installation and commissioning of the system with minimal disruption to Sherwood’s day to day operations. The solar solution will now meet nearly 40% of the site’s annual energy demand, generating more than 500,000 units of energy that would otherwise have been imported from the traditional grid supply.
