As David Cameron assembles his new cabinet today, we welcome the appointment of Amber Rudd as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change replacing the Lib Dem Ed Davey.

We aren’t too sure about Ms Rudd’s stance on renewables but we hope that she will desist from referring to ‘green energy’ when in fact what we produce is simply ‘energy’. Her predecessors in this job haven’t always been politicians of the highest standing and if she can simply avoid being jailed for telling porkies about speeding then she’ll be a massive improvement on at least one high profile holder of this office.

We wish her well.

At this stage we don’t know what will happen to Liz Truss but fear that she may have upset the powerful landowning interests with her quite reasonable demand that land used for solar farms should not also attract agricultural subsidies given that it was no longer used for ..er… agriculture.

Whoever is pulling the levers of power in the DECC, we still worry that energy policy requires long term thinking whereas politicians can rarely see beyond the next election. We hope to be surprised.
