Aston Martin has signed a deal to build its first electric car

It’s going to make petrolhead traditionalists choke on their unleaded. Aston Martin have announced that the all-electric Rapide will go into production and its motors will produce the equivalent of 1000bhp, almost twice the power of the conventional V12 Rapide.

CEO Andy Palmer is no green eco-zealot either. He cites the reason for the development of the RapideE as performance rather than economy. 1000hp and a 300 mile range will be a compelling combination and whilst an Aston V12 does make a lovely noise, too much of its energy is wasted in heat and sound. The RapideE,  which has hints of the Tesla S about its haunches, could be with us as early as 2017, comfortably beating Porsche’s four door electric MissionE to market.
