The Times reports on the setback the Qataris have suffered in their quest to generate the islands electricity from solar. Quite simply, it’s too hot. At desert temperatures up to 50 degrees centigrade, the efficiency of the panels falls away significantly.

Whilst this will inevitably be overcome by the weight of R&D resources being thrown at this by the Qatari government, it should be pointed out that this isn’t a problem we are likely to experience in the UK.
