Coal fired electricity is in its death throes

Coal fired electricity is in its death throes

In the period between April and the end of September, the UK got more of its electricity from solar than from coal.

This trend will decline as we go into the winter months but the writing is clearly on the wall for coal burning in the UK. Given that the vast majority of the coal we burn in power stations is imported, this is also good news for our balance of payments. Money that would otherwise leave the country to pay for imported coal stays here. Solar generation, of course, requires no fuel.

The Guardian reports on this huge moment in our energy landscape here.
