Ikea is fixing the cost of their energy for the next 25 years

Ikea have been generating electricity from PV for years and lest cynics accuse the highly profitable multi-national of milking subsidies. It should be noted that they were installing solar on their stores in Italy long after subsidies were withdrawn in that country (we commented on their store in Pisa last year, read about it here).

Instead, Ikea, being a family run business and not controlled by the short term demands of the stock market,  takes a long term approach to its business. Businesses regularly cite energy costs as one of the major threats to future profitability and by installing solar on the roof of their stores, Ikea is fixing the cost of their energy for the next 25 years. As it operates in many of the western European countries exposed to cost rises and supply risks inherent with a dependence on imported energy, this is a shrewd investment which will give Ikea a competitive advantage over its peers in years to come.
