Saharan desert could offer all the energy the world requires?

We had a nose around the Cheltenham Science festival on Saturday but didn’t see or hear anything as interesting as The Times’ Giles Whittell.    He writes in today’s Thunderer about hearing that 300 square miles of the Saharan desert,  covered in solar panels,  would provide all the worlds energy needs;  it’s probably pedantic to point out that he probably means 300 miles square rather than 300 square miles -  still not unthinkable in the Sahara -  but it is reasonable to ask how swapping dependence on Middle Eastern oil and gas for dependence on Middle Eastern electricity actually moves us any further forward.

Still,  when  the oil runs out,  we may have no choice….
