Scottish Power have announced Longannet coal fired station will close next March

Another part of the UK’s historic generation infrastructure will close next year. Scottish Power (Scottish in name but Spanish in ownership) has announced that the Longannet coal fired station will close in March. They have also announced that a gas fired plant planned for East Lothian will now not be built. Indeed, in a statement which should set alarm bells ringing loudly for anyone with a business depending on grid supplied electricity, Scottish Power have claimed that:

high carbon taxes and transmission charges mean it is no longer economic to generate electricity from coal or gas in Scotland.
