Solar electricity generation capacity has overtaken coal fired capacity for the first time

This is the sort of story that would be guaranteed to make the front page of The Guardian but not the FT;  but the Pink ‘Un lead yesterday with the news that solar electricity generation capacity has overtaken coal fired capacity for the first time. An average of 500,000 solar panels were commissioned daily last year. What makes this such big news is the speed at which solar is being deployed globally and the commercial and geo-political impact this will have as the world’s energy map changes.

This isn’t being driven by green dogma; the falling cost of solar PV technology means that solar is the hard-headed pragmatic choice from a commercial point of view. Per kWh of generation, solar is the cheapest form of electricity around and the cost of solar technology continues to fall as the efficiencies continue to climb.
