SSE have confirmed that the Ferrybridge C power station in Yorkshire is to close at some point in the next twelve months. It’s an ageing plant and like lots of us in their late forties, it’s high maintenance; running costs are set to exceed revenue by around £100million over the next five years so by March 2016 it will be no more.
This late forty-something is certainly no beauty, as anyone driving past it on the A1 would testify and coal burning power stations aren’t exactly the flavour of the month. However it should be pointed out that this is 2GW of electricity capacity that is lost to the grid and hasn’t been replaced. As more of these coal fired stations are shut down, and many more are planned to close, the threat of energy shortages is real.
New nukes were supposed to deal with this slightly tricky situation but despite offering EDF bigger and juicier bribes, sorry, incentives to build Hinckley C for example, it’s no nearer generating any electricity to replace that lost to the coal plants.
Subsidies for solar, on the over hand, have fallen by three quarters since 2012 and are set to fall further. Just sayin’…
