A 1970s street car has broken the world speed record for a road-legal electric vehicle

Well, it’s no looker, has skinny tyres and all the aerodynamic qualities of a house brick, but this odd-looking little 1970s street car has just recorded a quarter mile time of 9.87 seconds. As The Times reports

“This makes it faster over a standing quarter mile than the £300,000 Lamborghini Aventador, £200,000 McLaren 650S and £140,000 Porsche 911 Turbo S. It is faster than Tesla’s P90D electric car, even with its “ludicrous speed” boost.”

This has been achieved by removing the original 8hp engine and replacing it with the Li-On batteries from an Apache attack helicopter.
