Centrica has announced the sale of its last two large electricity generation plants

Further proof of the speed at which the old order is changing in the energy markets comes from Centrica who has announced the sale of its last two large electricity generation plants.

Centrica CEO Iain Conn cites a move into smaller, more nimbler and more localised generation and distribution assets. The smart money is moving out of large, centralised grid generation, just like it has in Germany, as renewable generation makes up the bulk of new electricity capacity.

The implications for your business are huge; grid energy is going to get more and more expensive as the cost of maintaining expensive and inefficient grids is spread over a declining volume of electricity. The proportion of the cost of each kWh of electricity taken up by infrastructure costs will increase.

Smart business will look to own and control at least a significant proportion of their own electricity supply and mitigate grid price increases. This is how Walsh Mushrooms have done just that.
