The Kennington Oval's gas holder has been given protected status

A slightly tenuous link to the matter of energy generation but it’s a nice story anyway and combines the two things we are most passionate about, energy and cricket. The rather handsome gas holder, one of a pair clearly visible from our preferred seats in the Bedser Stand at The Kennington Oval, has been given protected status which presumably means that we’ll be spared another bland block of flats on the site.

We have happy, and, if we’re entirely honest, somewhat hazy, memories of Kevin Peterson (158 off 187 balls) trying to hoick Brett Lee over said gas holder as England finally wrested The Ashes from Australian hands in September 2005.

The reprieve for Gas Holder No 1 as it is officially known, will mean that this graceful piece of industrial design will be around long after we’ve stopped burning gas to produce energy. It could become the Stonehenge of the industrial age.
