Amber Rudd has announced that all of the UK’s coal fired plants will be closed unless they revert to alternative fuels or install carbon capture by 2023
The Guido Fawkes website picks up on something we haven’t seen in the mainstream press and we think that perhaps we should. Amber Rudd has announced that all of the UK’s coal fired plants will be closed unless they revert to alternative fuels or install carbon capture by 2023. This basically means shipping loads more woodchip from Canada and the US or installing a technology which doesn’t really exist other than in the imaginations of climate change zealots.
We’re no fan of coal; although it generates around a third of our electricity, almost all of it is imported so there is not even an energy security case to continue to use it. However, we are big fans of operating our business in a modern, industrialised economy and removing a third of our electricity capacity without replacing it is a bit daft.
The government will cite a commitment to reducing CO2 emissions which seems a bit hollow given how much dirty coal those ever-so-green Germans are burning again following the shutdown of their nuclear industry. Not to mention the continuing huge expansion of coal fired generation in fast growing economies in Asia which will render Europe’s carbon reductions irrelevant.
Coal should be phased out but on grounds of energy security and economic prudence rather than a mad carbon target that only the EU seems to take seriously.
