EasyJet is trialling a new 9 seat electric airplane

#Cleantechnica reports that #EasyJet is trialling a new 9 seat airplane that could pave the way for the electricfication of short hop air travel.

The development with US based Wright Electric who have a goal to market an aircraft to carry 150 passengers on 300m journeys by 2030.

This is ambitious stuff but makes perfect sense in a world where urban populations are demanding cleaner air.  Jet fuel is a major contributor to the very low air quality found in and around airports. The attractions for airlines is obvious; unpredictable fuel costs are the major reason why airlines’ profits oscillate widely; not having to hedge against oil prices will be a massive boon and as all those airplanes are stored in massive hangars with huge roofspace, solar could be used to generate the electricity to charge the batteries.
