Renewables covered 80% of German electricity demand one afternoon last month

Ok, so it’s only for one afternoon, and it’s a Sunday afternoon in August at that. But for a modern industrialised country like Germany to be producing 80% of its energy demand from the sun and the wind is an incredible achievement.

Germany’s leaders have taken some real flack for steering their energy policy so heavily towards renewables but once it’s done, they are set for thirty years of minimal oil and gas imports and zero disruption form petulant OPEC producers. Other industrialised nations which haven’t taken this brave course will be casting envious glances at Germany and its hard won energy security.
