Research suggests that pollution from diesel engines is greater at cooler temperatures

We’re cyclists so we already knew this.

The BBC today reports on research that suggests that pollution from diesel engines is greater at cooler temperatures. Once the thermometer falls below 18 degrees, the Euro 5 category of engines are designed to run to maximise fuel efficiency over NOx emissions. This complies with EU carbon directives but is positively harmful for children, pedestrian and cyclist who have to breathe the filthy air.Research suggests that pollution from diesel engines is greater at cooler temperatures

The political attitude towards diesel engines is, thankfully, changing. This report will hasten the volte face and give governments more opportunity to reverse the generous tax advantages that diesels have hitherto enjoyed.  

We’re of the view that the diesel engine is in it’s death throes anyway; recent announcements from Daimler Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and VW show the direction that all major R&D investment is going and that is towards electric cars. A combination of increased taxation, growing awareness of the health issues and a greater understanding of the sheer convenience of electric cars will see a rapid decline in investment in diesel models.
