Portugal ran on renewable energy alone for four days in the first week of May
We’re used to seeing regular bulletins from Germany telling us how the nation generated 90% of its energy needs for four hours on a certain Saturday afternoon. Which, of course, is impressive, but little Portugal has trumped that with news that the country ran on renewable energy alone for four days in the first week of May.
We are seeing more and more stats like this across Europe as installed renewable capacity grows. Portugal still has a relatively small amount of solar electricity generation so if that changed, and the country is ideally suited to it, it’s not impossible that this nation’s dependence on imported oil and gas could end. As Portugal struggles to recover from the economic crisis, this is just the sort of boost the country needs.
