Impressive solar car ports at Nice airport
We were very impressed by these solar car ports on the top floor of a car park at Nice airport. 1.3MW of solar capacity which presently feeds directly into the airport building, where a real time display records output from the PV system. Every unit of electricity produced is used within the airport and replaces energy from the grid.
The cars are shaded (an important consideration in the south of France) and the structures produce valuable electricity; win win. No valuable agricultural land was used and there is no aesthetic impact on the landscape. Rooftops and car parks are the perfect place to locate solar, being right where the electricity demand is. At present, this floor of the car park is used by car rental firms - when their rental fleet goes electric, these car ports could be used to directly charge the cars. It’s a model that will be increasingly popular as motoring turns electric.
