Shell is already installing EV chargers at its petrol stations
Among the global oil majors, Shell appears to have been the quickest to recognise the threat to its core business posed by a shift to EVs. The UK/Dutch business is already installing fast chargers at its forecourts in the UK and Holland which is a smart move given that these sites are in prime positions and most have the sort of retail and catering offer which drivers will enjoy for the twenty minutes or so needed to charge their cars. Shell has now gone further by buying the Dutch charge point supplier NewMotion.
This is a canny acquisition for RDS; control of the chargepoints gives Shell an opportunity to replace lost revenue from falling petrol and diesel sales with income from electricity. Shell is ahead of the game here, others will be playing catch up.
